China Man Gulch Oct. 2013

A Patrol of the Mile Hi Jeep Club

Patrol 2 and friends, 9 Jeeps total, attempted Chinaman Gulch: Patrol 2, 8 - Chinaman Gulch 1. Beautiful day in the 60s with noth'n but sunshine. Whale rock ate up George' front (and rear?) axle. George turned around and met the rest of us on our way out at the loop junction, where Brian and Jim Chambers strapped him out, all the way to the Cowboy Cantina, where he called AAA, at about 6:30. George and Ann were home by 9:30. Could have been worse:(

Snapped the rear axle on Whale Tail. Just stupid driving on my part, not a mechanical failure. Made it back to the "Y" on the loop while the rest of the group continued. After the rest of the group arrived tried to drive up the first hill, and the already broken front ring and pinion gave out completely. Jim and Ryan strapped me up and dragged me out the rest of the way to Coyote Cantina. Was a very fun and challenging day. Weather was perfect, and the camaraderie was even better.

The tow out was very difficult as the front axle kept binding as the ring and pinion continued to fall apart. By the time we got back to the parking area it was completely gone, so at least no more binding. ;)

The only bad part of the day was the tow truck arrived just ten minutes after we called for it, so Ann and I were unable to join our friends for a drink and dinner at the Cantina.

The good news is I now have a very good excuse to upgrade the axles to Dana 60's front and rear. Already spoke to Chuck at High Country and he is sending me a quote.

Bad news is my rig will likely be down for at least a month. Will not be fixing it until at least after Thanksgiving.

That means someone will need to step up and schedule some runs over the next month or two.

Taking a line from theater, "The Jeeping must go on!"

By the way,

Watching Richard Dillon climb up the far left side of Whale Tail in his XJ... That made the entire trip worthwhile. If anyone else has not figured it out yet, Richard is the best darn offroader I have ever known.

Well done Richard.

We had a great day as well. We were sorry about you Jeep breaking George but glad you can upgrade to 60's now. Will be awesome! Richard is the man. Here is another video of him at the whale tail from another angle.

Thanks Deb and Janet,

It is folks like you two that make jeeping fun. Jeeps break, friends do not.

And thank you Jim and Karen, and Ryan. For towing my broke jeep back to town. Made for an exciting end of the trail!

So who is planning the next trip while my rig is down?

Thanks George and Ann and you are very welcome. Just glad you and Ann and the Jeep made it home safely. Jim and Karen are always willing to jump in and help and it is great to see folks like that in the group. The other guy that helped is named Bryan Hamilton. I have been on a couple runs with him and he is also always one of the first to jump up and help others. It is great when everyone treats each other respectfully and assists each other throughout the trail. I also wanted to thank our other visitors Chris and Rose Shaw, Alex LaGuardia, Matt Polacek for joining us and assisting with spotting, etc.

We are probably only available to go Jeeping the 3rd weekend of the next couple of Month's due to work and Holidays. Maybe not even that week depending on what happens with work. Maybe Fred can since he was scheduling quite a few previously? This is a large patrol so hopefully someone in the group can step-up.

My apologies Deb,

I thought his name was Ryan. I blame my bad hearing on the mixup. Please send my thanks to Bryan. I will recall his name in the future. His help got Ann and I home after all.

First time I broke my rig and was not able to get it home under it's own power.
